Carmen Yulin Cruz, the Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, spoke with Rise Up: Be Heard reporters in Washington D.C. on January 30, just hours before President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address. Cruz spoke hopefully but forcefully about the need for continued disaster relief in Puerto Rico, and the future of U.S. immigration policy.

Rise Up: Be Heard is a journalism training and mentorship program at FMG for young people living in California’s most underserved communities. The program is made possible by The California Endowment, a private health foundation.
